A 3-year PhD position is available at the Plasma Physics and Fusion Energy (PPFE) Section at DTU Physics. The section works with magnetically confined plasmas from a theoretical and experimental point of view with the focus on making fusion energy a commercially attractive energy source. The section is internationally recognized for its work with edge plasma turbulence and its work in the field of microwave scattering.

The planned research deals with increasing the heating efficiency of plasmas, a key element in realizing fusion energy on earth. The research is a part of a bigger focus area and you will be a part of a growing research team funded by the VILLUM young investigator programme with fellow PhD students and post docs. Microwave heating systems are a key element in obtaining high temperature fusion plasmas and a detailed understanding of the microwave interaction with the plasma is essential to reach the temperatures required for fusion power production. Recent work suggests that electron cyclotron heating waves may decay into plasma waves before reaching the plasma centre where the heating takes place. In this project, microwave decays is investigated on the fusion device Wendelstein 7X (W7X) located in north Germany.

Responsibilities and tasks
The successful candidate will join the microwave scattering team at DTU and be responsible for the microwave decay studies at the W7X stellerator. The candidate will develop, upgrade and run diagnostic systems to detect specific plasma waves at the W7X device. The project will also involve a great part of analytical and numerical work together with advanced data analysis to validate numerous theories of microwave transport.

The main part of the work will be performed at DTU and missions to the Max Planck institute for Plasma Physics in Greifswald are envisioned. Supervision of student projects and tutoring is expected.

Qualifications
Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering.

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
