VILLUM FONDEN have granted 150 million DKK over the next 8 years to “The Villum Center for the Science of Sustainable Fuels and Chemicals” (V-SUSTAIN). The clear aim of the centre is to phase out fossil fuels and thereby alleviate the negative impact the continuous use these have on the earth’s climate and environment.

The post-doc will work under the sub-project Electro-Chemical CO2 hydrogenation and focus on developing new catalyst materials that efficiently and with high selectivity can convert CO and CO2 into valuable chemical or fuels. The work will be based on strong interaction with the theory group, which is screening for new materials using DFT calculations for determining optimal catalysts. The project aims at synthesizing the most interesting candidates and testing them towards their ability to covert electric energy into chemical energy. The work may also involve fundamental investigation of single crystals modified with various adsorbates and characterization using UHV based surface science methods such as STM and XPS in combination with electrochemical methods.

A significant part of V-SUSTAIN takes place at the section for Surface Science and Catalyis (SurfCat) at the Department of Physics at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). It is envisioned that the successful candidate is capable of using the facilities such as sputter deposition chambers and UHV chambers for growing and characterizing the new materials under very well-defined conditions.

The successful candidate is well-motivated, hardworking and willing and able to work as part of a team. The candidate should have a PhD degree in Physics, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or Materials Science. It is mandatory that the candidate has extensive experience working with electrochemical reduction reactions and is experienced with UHV based methods such as STM, XPS, AES. Having experience with combining UHV and electrochemical cells is considered a great advantage.

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union. The period of employment is 2 years. The positions are available from 1 May 2018.
