Quantum optomechanics studies and exploits the interaction of light and moving objects at the most fundamental level and has proven a fertile testbed for foundational aspects of quantum mechanics. At the same time, quantum optomechanics offers a promising route for realizing a range of novel quantum sensing and information processing technologies.

As part of a recently granted Center of Excellence, "Center for Macroscopic Quantum States," a PhD position on experimental quantum optomechanics is offered at the Department of Physics, Technical University of Denmark (DTU). One of the objectives of the center is to control mechanical oscillators using non-classical light and eventually drive the oscillator itself into exotic quantum states . Towards this goal, current experiments on generation and application of non-classical lights will be extended and interfaced with low-pressure and low-temperature optomechanical setups currently under development.

Project description
The PhD project aims to develop and demonstrate novel optomechanical systems tailored for exploring the interface between quantum optomechanics and non-classical states of light. This includes numerical modelling and simulations, cleanroom fabrication, and optical characterization. All parts of the project will be carried out in close collaboration with other members of the optomechanics team as well as experts on mechanical micro-structuring from other departments at DTU. The fabrication process will be developed and optimized in collaboration with our process engineer. The entire PhD project will be carried out under supervision of center leader Prof. Ulrik Lund Andersen.

While the Center of Excellence is completely new, we have in the section on Quantum Physics and Information Technology (QPIT) a long history of widely recognized research within a range of diverse topics, such as continuous-variable quantum information processing, quantum enhanced sensing, and engineering of solid state quantum systems.

Responsibilities and tasks
The successful candidate will be part of a team dedicated to the design and development of a novel opto-mechanical system controlled by non-classical light.

Some of the tasks involved are
  • design and development of novel optomechanical structures
  • numerical optical and mechanical simulations using Comsol or similar software
  • data analysis
  • participation in design and construction of cryogenic and high vacuum setups for quantum optomechanical experiments
  • generation and characterization of non-classical light
  • mechanical and electronic development in close collaboration with our machine shop and electronic engineers
  • programming of experiment control software, mostly in Python

Other content of the position
As part of the Danish PhD program the student will follow a number of PhD courses as well as take part in teaching. Furthermore, there will be the opportunity to carry out a longer external stay. We have close collaborations with numerous internationally leading universities and research organization.

A limited amount of supervision of student projects and tutoring will also be expected.

Qualifications
Candidates should have a master's degree within optics/photonics, physics or engineering, or a similar degree with an equivalent academic level.

The candidate should be highly motivated and dedicated to work on challenging experiments. A background in experimental (quantum) optics is an advantage as well as experience with some of the following areas of work:

  • design and numerical simulation of optomechanical devices,
  • cleanroom fabrication,
  • non-classical light generation,
  • optical phase stabilization,
  • fiber optics,
  • Python programming.

We expect the successful candidate to have very good communication skills in English, to be able to work closely with other team members, and we highly value scientific curiosity and creativity.

Approval and Enrolment

Salary and appointment terms
The salary and appointment terms are consistent with the current rules for PhD degree students. The period of employment is 3 years.
