We focus on manipulating light using engineered optical nanomaterials.

What we do

The Applied Nano-Optics group conducts research in the design and experimental realization of optical metasurfaces with a range of different optical functionalities. Optical metasurfaces are composed of a single sheet of nanostructured optical materials with dimensions on the nanometer scale, and designed to manipulate an incoming light beam in a desired manner. Below you find our current research focus

  • Searching for the new 'glass': We apply computational methods to discover new optical materials and experimentally assess their potential for new optical applications.
  • Tunable metasurfaces: We design optical metasurfaces that can be tuned after fabrication through external stimulus, e.g., electrically and thermally.
  • Nano-optics meets 2D materials: We integrate 2D materials with optical materials to create new functionalities.
  • Flat metalenses: We develop new design principles for metalenses for manipulating incoherent light.

We take advantage of the excellent lab facilities in the NANOMADE section to synthesize, characterize, and fabricate optical nanostructures and metasurfaces. We complement our local labs with the tools available at DTU Nanolab, especially the use of DTU's state-of-the-art cleanroom and electron microscopes.
